Well, we’re here. Now what?
It’s 4:45 a.m. here and jet lag/illness have got the better of me. Marnie and I started to feel under the weather a few days before departing and now it has come back to smack us in the face. Last night we enjoyed a scotch on our balcony and turned in very early. Currently her congested sinuses are resulting in some interesting gurgling noises emanating from our bedroom, but in fairness my hacking and coughing had kept her up earlier. It made our flight much more unpleasant than it was already destined to be.
If you have never traveled all day on a plane before, you may wonder what one does for eighteen hours. The answer, in my case, is eat-movie-movie-sleep-eat-movie-movie-eat. The high points were the meatball spaetzle and “The Informant” (comforting and hilarious, respectively), the lows being the white fish couscous and “Schenectady, NY” (bland and confusing). Normally a book gets read at some juncture, but exhaustion got the better of me. There is also breaking point about two hours before arrival where one must strongly resist the urge to running screaming down the isles demanding to be let off this cursed contraption.
Our earlier lead on obtaining a car seems to have evaporated in midair, having been sold to an interested student. We feel like we know what we need to do to get established here, but just need a gentle nod in the right direction. Though we have some connections through the university, it really is just the two of us running the show down here. I’m sure we will buck up with a bit more rest and a day or two under our belts.
Hopefully today we can find an Internet café nearby, as the hotel wi-fi rates are extortionate. More to follow.
