Happy Returns

At last we have returned from the wilds of the jungles of Rwanda and the savannah of Tanzania, very grateful to be back in the land of hot showers and paved roads. We suffered a bit of distress at the hands of RwandAir, who changed our flight from Kilimanjaro to Kigali from 10 to 11:15 to 9:30, and our Kigali to Joburg from 2:30 to 2 to 6:30, then back to 2. It’s a young airline, and, needless to say, still working out the kinks. Despite this minor hiccup, we loved Rwanda, and intend to return sometime to see the gorillas again as well as Lake Kivu.

I promise I’ll get around to a full recounting of our adventures, but for now, my focus has temporarily shifted. I got a fever, and the only cure is World Cup. The city has certainly put on its game face, friendly greetings and waving flags galore. Unfortunately, the gougers are also well prepared. The cabbie at the airport gave us some song and dance about new government guidelines on mileage and meters, then tried to fleece us for R550 on our normally R350 ride. We grudgingly talked him down to R400, noticing on the ride home there wasn’t even a meter in the cab. Grrrr…I should have demonstrated my newly acquired gorilla charge attack on him.

Anyway, the city is bristling with good vibes, and I’m so excited I could puke (no, really, that’s a good thing). It seems as if I’ve been talking up this moment for years, and now it’s a mere three days away. We’re joining a Kirstein get together for the opener, and I may have weaseled a ticket for USA vs England on Saturday. Yee-hah!
